Ronda Trip Overview

What to Expect When Visiting Ronda, Andalucía, Spain
From Ronda we drive out into the dramatic limestone mountains of the Genal Valley. Following narrow, twisting mountain roads, we pass through remote white villages, many of which survive almost completely from the harvest of the chestnut trees which fill the southern hills of the valley.
Itinerary
We make a short stop in the village of Juzcar, unusually painted bright blue, originally as part of the publicity to launch the first Smurf movie. Whilst the village is no longer allowed to promote its ‘Smurfness’, its unique blue colour makes it a distinctive sight amidst the mountains.
From Juzcar we continue through the mountains to the Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park. This protected area of mountains and forests is home to fallow and roe deer, ibex, muflon and wild boar, and is also the native territory of the rare ‘pinsapo’ trees, or Spanish fir. We head into the grounds of a private forest estate, owned and run by a local family with extensive knowledge of the local flora and fauna. A member of the family will take you on a Nature Walk through the forest, stopping to point out interesting sights along the way. The walk finishes at a unique hut, built by the family from the wood of one single giant pinsapo tree. Here you will enjoy lunch, including dishes prepared from the locally-hunted game, cooked according to generations-old family recipes.
