Hiking – Mr Hendersons Way – 17km – Challenging Level

Ronda Trip Overview

This walk takes the less travelled path from Ronda out to the Guadiaro river valley. It explores some of the most unspoilt and peaceful hillside landscapes before dropping sharply down to the Guadiaro river. We then follow a rocky path known as “Mr Henderson’s Way” which undulates above the river banks to Jimera Estacion, where we finish at a local bar.

We head out from Ronda into the southwestern hills, crossing high open pastures and small mountain streams, enjoying stunning views throughout. We descend to the valley of the Guadiaro river and then join “Mr Hendersons’ Way. This narrow rocky pathway follows above the river through a picturesque limestone gorge. It is named after the ambitious British financier of the Victorian railway project which cut through the mountains from Algeciras on the southern coast of Spain up to Granada. The railway line still winds through the bottom of the valley – not many trains run each day so they barely disturb the tranquil mountain atmosphere.

Itinerary

From the old part of Ronda, head westwards over rolling hills towards the Rio Guadiaro. The continue on an undulating path known as Mr Hendersons’ Way along the river canyon to the village of Jimera estacion.
Note: This route uses a mix of unsurfaced roads and narrower tracks. There are some steeper or eroded sections and a couple of small stream crossings, which are normally dry. Mr Henderson’s Way is a narrow path with a drop to the side. The path itself is eroded in places and a little rocky but not tricky.
