Cycling – Las Palomas Pass (White Villages) – 41km – Challenging Level

Ronda Trip Overview

Enjoy spectacular views, a challenging climb to the top of Las Palomas Pass (1357m) and a thrilling mountain descent to finish. You will cycle through the heart of the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park and ride via the white villages of Montejaque, Grazalema and Zahara de la Sierra.

This tour follows the same route as our Zahara Lakeside day tour as far as Grazalema village, cycling along small country roads which twist and turn through the mountains. But it is the climb up to Las Palomas and the descent down into Zahara which will stay in your mind for many years to come. From Grazalema we climb around 7km; if we are lucky, we may see mountain ibex hopping between the rocks on either side of the road or vultures soaring overhead. From the top of Las Palomas Pass the views in both directions are incredible. Then we enjoy a 14km switchback descent, with incredible views of the mountains and the lake below. Time for optional refreshments in Zahara before we return to Ronda by minibus.

Itinerary

Beginning in Montejaque village, ride through dramatic mountains and cork oak forest to Grazalema. Cycle to the top of Las Palomas Pass (nearly 1400m) for amazing views, then thrill to a 14km switchback descent down to Zahara village.
The three villages you will pass through date from Arab times but all have a distinctly different look and feel: Montejaque is small and sleepy; Grazalema was a wealthier village, built on a large blanket weaving industry, so contains some grand old houses, and Zahara sits dramatically above its startlingly blue lake, with the remains of an Arab fort still dominating the skyline above the village.
