Let me take you for a stroll through the streets of the gracious town of Mahon! Since ancient times the bay of Mahon has been the object of desire of different civilizations (Carthaginians, Romans, Vandals, Byzantines, Arabs, Spanish, British, French. . . ). Situated on high cliffs, overlooking one of the largest natural harbours of the world, Mahon offers many spectacular viewpoints whereas its old town boast a melting pot of many historical buildings like the church of Saint Mary which treasures one of Europe’s most important organs, the picturesque fish market and its buoyant tapas bar, the former Carmelite Cloister which houses the food market, the Oliver manor house with its unique murals, the Governor’s Palace, first setting of the historic saga Master and Commander and the Teatro Principal, one the oldest active opera theatres of Europe.

Going down to Cales Fonts, we get a lovely view over the cove decorated with old caves and fishermen’s warehouses that over time have become cosy shops, bars and restaurants. We pass along the promenade to enjoy the views over the entrance of the port of Mahon with the Lazaretto island, the fortress of Isabel II and the King’s island. We return through the parade ground of this former garrison town, which, surrounded by the town hall and old British barracks, forms a beautiful ensemble in Georgian style.
