Puerta del Sol is a main plaza of Madrid, reputedly named for a gate (puerta) that stood there until 1510 and had on its front a representation of the sun (sol). Throughout Madrid’s history the square has been the focal point of intellectual and economic activity.

A baroque building in the center of Madrid, that now houses the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation. Former prison, that was later converted into a palace.
Stop At: Plaza Mayor, Calle Gerona 4, 28012 Madrid Spain
A must-see and a symbol of the city. Over the years it has been the setting for many public events, from bullfights, processions, fiestas and theatrical productions to trials of the Inquisition and even executions.

A major marketplace during the 13th and 14th century, the plaza got its name (which means “Straw Square”) because in its medieval height it was also a tithing site for the Catholic church – peasants gathered there to offer a fraction of their harvest to feed the chaplain’s and bishop’s mules.

A sixteenth-century church in the center of Madrid. It has been a refuge for people fleeing official persecution for years.
Pass By: Casa Museo Lope de Vega, Calle Cervantes 11, 28014 Madrid Spain
The Lope de Vega House Museum, on Calle Cervantes, was built in the sixteenth century and purchased by the great writer of the Spanish Golden Age in 1610. He lived in it until he died, in 1635. In 1935, marking three hundred years since the death of Lope de Vega.
Pass By: Convento de las Trinitarias Descalzas de San Ildefonso, Calle Lope de Vega 18, 28014 Madrid Spain
Located in the Barrio de las Letras, this convent was initially founded in 1612 around a modest church, where the writer Miguel de Cervantes was buried in 1616.
