Stop At: Avila, Avila, Province of Avila, Castile and Leon

Visit Avila and Segovia, learning about the rich cultural heritage of the country and its people. Sheltered by the Sierra Gredos Mountains we find Ávila, a World Heritage City. Behind the city walls of this capital, there is a significant set of churches and Renaissance palaces that bear witness to the past wealth of the town as a textile center. As it is the birthplace of Saint Teresa of Jesus, so it has left its mark across the city, both inside and outside the city walls, with a large number of religious buildings linked to the saint’s life. The European Commission has nominated Ávila the Access City Award 2010.

Next, continue on to visit the remains of the Roman Empire as seen at the Aqueduct of Segovia. Discover how this residence of some of the kings of Castilia is one of the most important medieval groups of buildings in Spain.

Finally, admire the “Lady of the Cathedrals” and see the most spectacular castle in Spain, the Alcazar, which was built as a fortress but was also used as a royal palace, state prison, university and military academy.
