Stop At: Parque del Drago, Paseo de Nicolas Estevez Borges 7, 38430 Icod de los Vinos, Tenerife Spain

The Parque del Drago (Drago Park) is a unique natural garden that can’t be found anywhere else in the world. The reason is that there you can find the world’s biggest and oldest Atlantic Drago Tree, taller than 20 metres and around 1,000 years old. The park, which constitutes a privileged environment for the Canary Island’s flora, used to be passed through by a road that ended up being diverted several kilometres away in order to preserve the Drago Milenario, an authentic Eco Feat within the Canary Islands.

Through this route you will get to know more about the Park bird and reptile biodiversity, which is a great sample of the birds and reptiles that can be spotted around the island.

The route gets started with a brief introduction on the Park. Then, you will get an overall perspective about the Canarian Avifauna, the birds inhabiting the Archipelago and the number of endemic species and subspecies. Right after, you will discover the Park Bioclimatic Floor and its vegetation and learn how the birds get distributed by forest masses. You will be able to witness different species either in mid-flight or standing on trees.

The Drago Milenario is located at the lower area of the park. There, you can find species that inhabit dry areas, like the Canary. Later, you will discover the forest birds, mostly the ones inhabiting the Canarian Laurel Forest. In the surroundings of the wine press and coal bunker, you will have the chance to spot tricky warblers and friendly robins.

At the end of the ornithological tour, you will learn about higher-area birds, the ones inhabiting pine forests and high mountains mostly.

Once this first part of the route is over, you will get into the world of Canarian Reptiles, where current and prehistoric lizards play the leading role.

You will meet the Goliath Lizard, the great prehistoric reptile, and will learn more about this animal.

The route ends at the lizard feeders and drinking troughs, from where you will get a spectacular view of the Drago Milenario, one of the most photographed plants in the planet, and the imposing Teide. This picture may constitute the best coastal perspective of this majestic volcano considered Tenerife’s Lord and Master.
