Itinerary

Stop At: Granada, Granada, Province of Granada, Andalucia

where serene Islamic architecture and Arab-flavoured street life go hand in hand with monumental churches, old-school tapas bars, and counterculture graffiti art.

The city, sprawled at the foot of the Sierra Nevada, was the last stronghold of the Spanish Moors and their legacy lies all around: it’s in the horseshoe arches, the spicy aromas emanating from street stalls, the teterías (teahouses) of the Albayzín, the historic Arab quarter. Most spectacularly, of course, it’s in the Alhambra, an astonishing palace complex whose Islamic decor and landscaped gardens are without peer in Europe.

There’s also an energy to Granada’s streets, packed as they are with bars, student dives, bohemian cafes, and intimate flamenco clubs, and it’s this as much as the more traditional sights that leave a lasting impression.

The tour could be customized in each case depending on the meeting point & time, your physical conditions and the climatic circumstances, but the ideal tour would be as follows:

Meeting at Plaza Isabel la Católica and head up towards the picturesque Plaza Nueva; then visit the Lower Albayzín and follow the Darro river until we arrive at Paseo de Los Tristes, where we would admire the magnificent views of the Alhambra.
From here, we would mount up the hill to enter in the Sacromonte district and keep climbing through its sinuous steps with amazing views; if we’re lucky, we might find some neighbor who would show us their cave-house for a euro or two. Then we would head towards the UNESCO listed Albayzín neighborhood where we will stop at San Nicolás, the most famous viewpoint in Granada.
After this, we would descend downtown and visit the Royal Chapel, the former silk market and an old caravanserai. We would finish in front of the Cathedral of Granada where I could suggest some good places to eat.
