Stop At: Durango, Durango, Province of Vizcaya, Basque Country
Tour starts and finishes in Durango old town, with its lively bars and interesting historical monuments, leading to quiet country lanes with views of the Urkiola mountains. Durango was founded in medieval times, and has over 700 years of history with a wealth of interesting cultural, religious and architectural heritage. There are some splendid churches including the Basilica of Santa María de Uribarri, with its enormous portico covering the old market square, and the Baroque arch and church of Santa Ana, in the riverside square of the same name which you will pass on this tour.

Stop At: Mendiola, Mendiola, Province of Vizcaya, Basque Country
Tour continues from Durango the scenic way into rural districts of Abadiño to see the interesting Larringan windmill, with a spectacular backdrop of the mountains all the way. Continue down to Mendiola and on to the Atxarte gorge, the gateway to the Urkiola Nature Park, popular with hikers and climbers.

Stop At: Atxondo, Atxondo, Province of Vizcaya, Basque Country
Continue your tour to the beautiful Atxondo valley, our own ‘little Switzerland’, up and down the hills with the dramatic backdrop of the Urkiola mountains. You will see the Muntsaraz tower and rural districts of Abadiño en route to Axpe and Arrazola. Optional short walk along the old mining trainline now converted into a walking route (Vía Verde/Bide Gorri de Arrazola). Lovely mountain views, industrial history of the tungsten mines, gastronomical interest re Asador Etxebarri (Axpe) and local honey cooperative.

Continue your tour visiting the beautiful historic Old Town of Elorrio with its noble mansions and beautiful monuments. You will enter via the 15th gateway with its stone coat of arms and arch, and continue along to the square.

Stop At: Sortzez Garbiaren eliza, Gernikako Arbola Plaza, 1, 48230 Elorrio, Bizkaia, Spain
Continue through the old town past historic mansions and stone arches into the beautiful main square, surrounded by bars and cafés and the pelota court. You will have time to admire the magnificent Basílica de la Purísima Concepción, the largest temple in the province of Biscay, with a wonderful Baroque altarpiece.

Stop At: Necropolis de Argineta, Barrio Zenita Junto Al a Ermita de San Adrian, Elorrio Spain
Continue through the old town with optional stroll up the pedestrianised area past splendid mansions and gardens, also several of the Renaissance period wayside crosses. You will then head up the hill to the magical 7th century necropolis of Argiñeta, with great views over the hills between its tombstones and carved sarcophagus. After a stop here to admire the view you will head back down the hill to visit the typical rural neighbourhood of Zenita, with its ancient farmhouses with family coats-of-arms, a watermill and raised grain-store.

Pass By: Torre Muntsaraz, Muntsaratz Auzoa, 17A, 48220 Abadino Spain
Tour past the tower house of Muntsaraz on your way back to Durango. This lovely building was originally built as a defence tower by a noble family in the 9th century. It was extensively re-designed in Renaissance times, including the elegant sixteenth century gallery, now considered an outstanding example of civil Renaissance architecture. You will continue your tour through the old town of Abadiño (Zelaieta) on your way back to Durango old town and station, or the tourist office if you prefer.
