The National Archaeological Museum of Tarragona is the oldest in Catalonia in its specialty. Since its origins, in the first half of the 19th century, it has been the center for the recovery and conservation of the archaeological heritage of Tarragona and its area of influence.
The historical and monumental importance of the Roman city of Tarraco, capital of Hispania Citerior, and of the archaeological sites in its surroundings, has provided the museum with an important and rich collection of archaeological materials that illustrate the process of Romanization of the Iberian Peninsula.
Although some of the pieces that are currently part of the museum come from collections of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, most of the funds have been recovered in the last 150 years as a result of the construction of the modern port and, more recently, of the extraordinary urban growth of the city.
