Following the sacking of Cadiz by the Count of Essex in 1596, the inhabitants saw the need to raise city walls to protect against further assaults. With the exception of the land frontage, the rest of the walls were constructed on the shore to protect against invasion from the sea.
Walls, now, form part of the idiosyncrasy of Cadiz and serve as a source of pride for the city.

The Plaza de San Juan de Dios has been the commercial centre of the city since way back in the 16th century, the square opens out onto the harbour and the Atlantic Ocean and is home to a fascinating collection of buildings, among them the City Hall and a church that takes the same name as the square, that being the Church of San Juan de Dios.

The Central Market in Cadiz is more than just a market. This is the social centre of the city, the place where gossip is exchanged, meals are planned, drinks are enjoyed and life is lived. We will visit the Market in the morning to see the energetic commerce of everyday life, as the people of Cadiz descend upon this famous square in search of fruit, vegetables, meat, bavardage, rumours and the rest. Oh, and fish, plenty of fish, as the central fish market is one of the great Cadiz experiences.

Stop At: Plaza de la Mina, 11004 Cadiz Spain
This square was built in the mid-19th century, on the site of the old vegetable garden of San Francisco convent. It was converted into a public area after the sale of church lands conducted by Mendizábal.
The latest rehabilitation in 1991, respected the 19th century aesthetics that characterise the square, which has always been a favourite spot with Cadiz residents of all ages.
